As health care costs continue to rise, fewer employers and working families will be able to afford coverage, and the number of uninsured Americans will inevitably rise. Recent reports from NAR show that thirty percent of the 1.3 million REALTORS® in this country are without health insurance, mostly through the policies of their spouses. Those who have independent coverage insurance typically pay an exorbitant amount to insure themselves and their families.
To make health care more affordable and accessible for small businesses including REALTORS®, McHCAR and the National Association of REALTORS® promotes passage of legislation that would create federally regulated small business heath plans (SBHPs), also known as association health plans (AHPs). Allowing REALTORS® to arrange their health benefits through associations will make coverage more affordable by spreading risk among a much larger group, strengthening negotiating power with plans and providers, offering insurance across state lines, and reducing administrative costs. To appeal to our broad membership base, we would be able will offer comprehensive benefit packages that meet a wide array of health needs and preferences.
Small Business Health Plan legislation has been introduced again this Congress. It is our job to encourage co-sponsorship from Senators and Members of Congress to keep the momentum going.
